Gesha

Gesha (Geisha) is an Arabica name covering more than one genetic lineage. World Coffee Research documents the Panamanian T2722 lineage as tall, low-yielding, and capable of exceptional cup quality under suitable growing conditions. Not all coffee sold as Gesha shares this lineage, and flavor cannot be established from the name alone. Farm, producer, processing, cultivation and roasting details matter.

Where did it come from?

The Panama T2722 lineage traces to Ethiopian plant material collected in the 1930s, transferred through research collections, and introduced in Panama in the 1960s. It became prominent in international coffee competitions in the mid-2000s. See World Coffee Research for lineage details.

What does it tend to taste like?

Floral, jasmine and peach-like aromas have been associated with well-grown Panama T2722 lots, but cups vary. A Gesha label does not guarantee a particular flavor.

Plant characteristics

Tall growth habit; low yield potential according to World Coffee Research's Panama Geisha profile. Local performance varies.

Why producers grow it

High cup-quality potential can command premium prices for documented exceptional lots. The low yield potential, production costs and local growing suitability still matter; financial success is not guaranteed.
