Wush Wush

Wush Wush is an ancient Arabica landrace variety originating from the Wushwush region in southwestern Ethiopia, located near the Bonga forest in the Kaffa zone. Unlike modern hybrids or cultivars developed through laboratory breeding, Wush Wush is considered a native heirloom variety that has persisted for centuries with minimal crossbreeding. Its name is derived directly from the village where it was first identified, a region historically celebrated for both its high-quality coffee and its vibrant, aromatic teas.

The variety was introduced to South America, particularly Colombia, approximately 25 to 30 years ago. Much like the trajectory of the famed Geisha variety, Wush Wush has found a secondary home in the high-altitude, fertile mountains of Colombia. Producers in these regions have discovered that the specific microclimates and soil conditions of the Andes allow the variety to express a heightened intensity of its inherent fruity and floral characteristics, effectively bridging the gap between its Ethiopian heritage and the terroir of the Americas.

In the field, Wush Wush is characterized by its low productivity compared to common commercial cultivars like Caturra or Bourbon. The coffee cherries typically grow in dense clusters, and the beans themselves exhibit significant size variation, ranging from small screen sizes to larger 18+ screens. Because of its lower yield and lack of robust disease resistance, it is a high-risk, high-reward crop for farmers. The increased labor and management required to cultivate it successfully contribute to its status as a rare and expensive specialty product.

For the roaster and the consumer, Wush Wush is defined by a sophisticated and often unpredictable sensory profile. It is frequently described as delicate, aromatic, and tea-like, with a high propensity for sweetness. Common tasting notes include blueberries, vanilla, maple, and lavender, though the profile can shift toward spicy or botanical nuances depending on the specific farm and processing method. Because it is not a uniform hybrid, individual lots can display distinct personalities, making it a favorite for specialty roasters seeking exotic, limited-run offerings.

Producers choose to plant Wush Wush primarily for its market differentiation and the premium prices it commands.
