Sudan Rume

Sudan Rume, often referred to as Rume Sudan, is a wild Arabica variety that represents one of the most significant genetic reservoirs in the coffee world. First documented in 1941 by economic botanist A.S. Thomas, the variety was identified growing wild on the slopes of the Boma Plateau in South Sudan, near the Ethiopian border. Its discovery provided researchers with a distinct genetic lineage separate from traditional Ethiopian landraces, establishing the region as a legitimate second center of diversity for Coffea arabica.

Following its initial identification, samples of Sudan Rume were distributed to research stations across East Africa, including sites in Tanzania and Kenya. These collections were vital for preservation, eventually finding their way into the CATIE genetic bank in Costa Rica. For decades, the variety remained largely obscure to the commercial market, serving primarily as a genetic resource for plant breeders seeking to improve the resilience and quality of other coffee cultivars.

In the field, Sudan Rume is characterized by its wild, low-yielding nature. Unlike modern, high-production hybrids, it does not offer the volume that many commercial farmers require for profitability. Its growth habit and productivity are reflective of its wild origins, making it a niche choice for producers who prioritize quality and genetic heritage over sheer output. Because of these agronomic challenges, it is rarely found in large-scale plantations, appearing instead in specialized, high-altitude estates that focus on rare varieties.

Despite its low yields, Sudan Rume is celebrated for its profound impact on coffee breeding. It is a documented genetic parent of SL-28, the iconic Kenyan variety that defined the flavor profile of the region for much of the 20th century. By contributing its unique genetic traits to such influential cultivars, Sudan Rume has indirectly shaped the sensory expectations of specialty coffee drinkers globally, even when the variety itself is not the primary component of the blend.

The cup profile of Sudan Rume is frequently described as highly complex and layered. It often exhibits a distinct elegance, characterized by floral aromatics—such as rose—and a vibrant acidity reminiscent of tropical fruits like mango and cherry. Its flavor profile is often noted for being wilder and more herbaceous than standard Bourbon or Typica varieties, sitting at a unique intersection between Ethiopian heirloom elegance and a distinct, singular character.

Today, Sudan Rume is cultivated in small quantities by specialty producers, most notably in Colombia, where estates like Inmaculada and Hacienda Misiones have successfully showcased the variety's potential. These producers choose to plant it specifically for its rarity and the high-end market demand for unique, complex flavor profiles. While it remains a difficult plant to manage, its status as a 'living fossil' of the coffee world ensures its continued relevance among roasters and enthusiasts who value genetic purity and historical depth.
