Nyeri
Nyeri County lies between the southwestern slopes of Mount Kenya and the eastern flank of the Aberdare range, and it is arguably Kenya's most prestigious coffee origin. Coffee arrived in the country in the 1890s — the first recorded trees date to 1893 — and the central highlands around Nyeri were among the earliest areas planted.
The county's smallholder farms sit roughly between 1,500 and 1,950 m on deep red volcanic soils, with two rainy seasons a year ripening two crops. It is the classic Kenyan production system: plots measured in trees rather than hectares, delivering cherry to -run washing stations — factories — whose names, such as Gichathaini, Gatura, Gititu and Thageini in the Tetu and Mathira growing areas, function as the origin marks that specialty buyers track.
SL28 and SL34, the Scott Agricultural Laboratories selections of the 1930s, remain the quality benchmark varieties here; Ruiru 11 and Batian, released by the Coffee Research Institute in 2010, are widely planted for disease resistance and yield. Processing is overwhelmingly fully washed, with the fermented-then-soaked Kenyan method standard across the factory system.
In the cup, the trade's shorthand for Nyeri is structure: blackcurrant-driven acidity in a dense, savory frame — the profile that made Kenya's reputation. As always, that is a regional tendency, and every lot is specific to its factory and season.

These are documented directory relationships, not independently verified farm visits or lot traceability. Follow individual profiles to inspect available sources.
