Editorial illustrationKirinyaga
Kirinyaga County spreads across the central and southern slopes of Mount Kenya, immediately south and east of its neighbor Nyeri — the county takes its name from Kirinyaga, the Kikuyu name for the mountain itself. The town of Kerugoya anchors the growing area, on some of the most fertile land in the country.
Farms sit commonly between about 1,500 and 1,900 m on red volcanic loam, with cool temperatures and abundant water running off the mountain — conditions that slow maturation and concentrate sugars in the cherry. The county's smallholders deliver to -run factories within the same washing-station system as the rest of central Kenya; Kibirigwi Farmers Society and its stations such as Ngugu-ini are among the documented names buyers track.
The varieties are the central-Kenya set: SL28 and SL34 — the 1930s Scott Agricultural Laboratories selections — as the quality benchmarks, with Ruiru 11 and Batian, named after Mount Kenya's highest peak and released in 2010 for disease resistance, widely planted. Processing is overwhelmingly fully washed.
In the cup, buyers commonly describe Kirinyaga as slightly sweeter and softer than neighboring Nyeri's savory intensity, within the same blackcurrant-and-acidity family that defines the region's coffee — a general tendency, never a guarantee, and every lot is factory- and season-specific.
